Good News for Stockton, CA!

January 31st, 2007

Yes, there is good news for my childhood hometown of Stockton, California — and I’m not even being sarcastic this time. This development has to do with the world of sports and a particularly unlikely athletic event.
No — for those trying to guess — it’s not that the Stockton Bears matched up with the Riveroak Redskins again, didn’t lose and have one of their players manhandled by an opposing coach. It also has nothing to do with hoodlums doing donuts in lowered, bass-thumping jalopies in sideshow competitions either. Instead, it has to do with the 2nd annual Tour of California, America’s premier bicycle stage race.
Why did I lift some eyebrows when I first learned of this news? Well, as any real Stocktonian would tell you, “Roads ain’t for bikes they for cars. Like, duh!” I still have vivid memories of trying to bike […]

Noise on the Tube

January 30th, 2007

If only….
People with loud music carrying through their headphones is a pet hate of mine and many others. You’ve probably seen this ad on the Tube with the invisible man, presumably playing music as loudly as he likes as he’s wearing noise cancelling earplugs.
But would they work on all Lines on the Tube? When I travelled on the Northern Line or even entering a tunnel on the Piccadilly Line, I would normally turn up the volume and often forget the levels and gradually get used to louder and louder music.
You can usually find an expert to confirm most theories and Professor Prasher head of University College London’s Audiology unit found that the squealing on the Victoria Line was such that you needed ear protection:
“I am shocked by the levels that we actually recorded. They were peaking at 118dB which is quite horrendous. The squealing and […]

Tenth time ’round the clock

January 30th, 2007

Owners of high-mileage automobiles know that there is a certain magic about seeing your clock tick over from 99,999 miles to zero. As if your old 100,000 mile warrior is brand new again. A quick check reveals that there’s no such luck: The rust is still there. That passenger door is still dented. The engine […]

Tube Couple Have First Date

January 30th, 2007

James Blunt eat your heart out
Splashed on the front of Metro yesterday were Melanie Speth and Ben Moon who were brought together by Metro after Ms Speth spotted Mr Moon on the District Line and emailed his picture round the world to track him down. The full story of their first date (which appeared to go remarkably well) along with pre-requisite photos in full Cilla Black Blind Date stylie is here.
Funnily enough it was only last week, that I was wondering whether they’d had their date yet. Some of the commenters to an earlier post on this thought the whole thing looked a bit set up and that Ms Speth was a bit of a “stalker”. This view was shared by three girls who were discussing the couple on the Piccadilly Line yesterday:
“I’d be mortified if my picture was all over Metro“.“Yeah how desparate to email everyone […]

More Nude Cycling

January 30th, 2007

“You know how it is looking for something online,” wrote my friend T. (abbreviated here to obfuscate her identity), “sometimes you find it right away and other times you find random stuff on the way. Well, when I came across this site during a search I knew I had to share it with you.”
She added, “Geeky engineering bike stuff and nude women… strange combination for sure… but I didn’t think you’d find anything offensive about naked chicks and bikes together in one picture.”
It turns out T. was right; I didn’t find anything offensive about them. In fact, I found her link so informative about high-powered bicycle lighting systems I thought I’d pass it on just in case someone wanted to build their own lights.
Don’t laugh. I actually did just that back in college (and no this wasn’t even for a class), as I was […]

Pocket Cameras!

January 28th, 2007

After weeks of looking around for the perftect point and shoot camera I found it! Countless hours were spend over at dpreview.com tallying up the pros and cons of the small digital camera heat. One camera stood out from the beginning due to a friend’s recommendation, the Fuji Film F30.

The F30 is about the size of a deck of cards, and it packs plenty of tricks. This 6.3 mega pixel camera has a wolloping 3200 iso level. The higher the iso level the better and more natural your low light shots come out. I am now the proud owner of the F30 and bring it with me everywhere.

This camera is the size where you can put it in your pocket and not miss any shots. The pics that I’ve taken are miles and miles better than my two year old kodak easyshare camera. If you are in the market for a point and shoot for your trip save yourself the time of researching and go snap this bad boy up!

Using adjustment layers

January 28th, 2007

Photo editing falls into two categories: Adjustments, which affect the whole photograph (much like our introduction to contrast, using the levels tool, from yesterday), and spot editing, which affects a smaller part of an image. Any photo editing you do with brushes, selection tools etc would be a spot edit.
While spot editing can be […]

Contrast in photos

January 27th, 2007

If you are reading this, you have probably heard people moaning about lack of contrast in one of your pictures. I am sorry about that, but — really — it is one of the most annoying things in the world. The medium of photography allows you to enhance the way you see the world, so […]
